Comments and log on the various sites that we have stayed is listed below. Troy and Jane's Rating System: Scale of 1-10: 1 as the worst and 10 as the best. There is a site rating for each location, where reviewed, that gives our recommendations as the best site within the RV Park. This rating is based on our personal preferences and "The Eagle" towing the Jeep Cherokee.
Table of Locations:
Sierra Blanca, Texas (High Country RV Park) Very clean site. It is dusty due to the nature of the dry weather in the area, but not that bad. Small park with about 30 sites. Easy connection set-up and all of it is on an elevated concrete apron which is clever, clean, and nice. They state complete service, including phone. The connections are there, as said before, cleverly done. But it was not activated. The Trailer Life book says that it was active and they said the same when they were called by Jane. Not true. The site is very close to the highway and a couple of railroad lines... so the about 04:00 hours in the morning you will get the train whistle blows indicating their approach to the town and road intersections. Sound overflow from the highway is not that bad. Turn the AC fan on so it continually runs and it drowns out most of this noise. They have a Restaurant and Pub on the premises. Nothing fancy. The town is quaint and I could stay there again as an overnight stop when cutting across Texas. Would we stay there again: Only as an overnight stop-over. Troy and Jane Rating: Troy's: 6.0 Jane's: 5.0 Combined: 5.5 Site Rating: Pending
Munds Park, Arizona (Munds Park RV Resort) Large site with permanent travel trailers nicely set-up in part of the park. Only 6 pull-throughs large enough to handle the Eagle and Jeep (60+ feet). In relatively nice setting, next to National Forest and Sedona, AZ is only 12 miles away (via off-road, which is great, dusty, and spectacular views that are worth the vehicle clean-up afterwards). Nice facilities, include store, recreation room, large log cabin style back porch. We were first there in April 2000 and the nights are quite cool, about 40°F (the heater is necessary for the evenings this time of the year). Munds Park, AZ looks to be a retirement and summer home area. Many are very nicely done and it is was not crowded when we were there in April 2000. Almost complete facilities, with the exception of 50 Amp service which will only be available in the new area (under construction whilst we were there). The folks there were very accommodating. We needed a phone connection for the computer and when Jane called to check, they installed a line for us and only charged us an extra $3.00 per day. The connection allowed for a 40,000 BPS or better connectivity. Not a very good setting for sitting outside under the awning, as the wind can blow and be a bit dusty. The site is not laid out to make this as enjoyable as others visited in our travels. Would we stay there again: Yes, it is in a good location relative to Sedona, AZ, the Grand Canyon (Under 2 hour drive), the Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, and others. Great hiking area and not bad on the cycling if you can find a paved ranch road. Many of the roads in this area, such as the Farm to Markets and Ranch Roads are not paved. Therefore a lot of the cycling is done with off road bikes. Troy and Jane's Rating: Troy's: 7.0 Jane's: 7.0 Combined: 7.0 Site Rating: Pending
Fort Davis, Texas (Fort Davis State Park) This is absolutely one of the best, if not the best park we have stayed. It has scenic beauty that you must see to believe. The sky at night is known as being one of the clearest in the USA (so clear the McDonald Observatory is here). Excellent cycling (touring) and hiking. The town of Fort Davis is great to visit and represents a step back into the Old West. The facilities are complete with all hook-ups except for phone (which is the only thing that keeps this park from being a 10 on the Troy gauge. When satellite phone becomes a reasonable reality, it will be a 10). There are only about 8-10 sites that are big enough to accommodate the T&J rig, so reservations should be made. Sites are not assigned until you arrive and you can select the site you want then come back and let the Ranger know. The best way to do this is to drive the car down to the site then come back and let them know. Animals abound here... Mule Deer and Javelina roam the park at dusk in search of food and they are quite use to the campers. Most of the Deer will let you touch/pet them. Stay away from the Javelina. Would we stay here again: Absolutely and we have several times. Troy and Jane's Rating: Troy's: 9.0 Jane's: 9.0 Combined: 9.0 Site Rating: Pending
Kerrville, Texas (Guadalupe River RV Resort) As of April 2000, this has been the best RV Resort that we have stayed. It is a big park and built right on the Guadalupe River. Many of the sites have a River view. More deer are here than you can possibly imagine (watch out at night when driving, or you can easily run into one). All hook ups are here... 50 Amp, Phone, etc. Very nice facilities and considering the size of this park, they do a good job in keeping it maintained. The area around here is absolutely one of the best cycling areas I have seen. Nearby Hunt, Texas is a fantastic place to cycle and take a drive. A really nice place to have dinner is in Hunt called Elaine's Table. A great hamburger and lunch place is the general store in Hunt. No disappointments here. Would we stay here again: Absolutely. Troy and Jane's Rating: Troy's: 9.2 Jane's: 9.5 Combined: 9.3 If this park was in a pristine setting, such as Fort Davis State Park, it would be a perfect 10. Site Rating: Pending
Big Bend, Texas (Big Bend National Park - Rio Grande Village) This is great park for its Panoramic views and the awe it will give you in it's vastness. The Rio Grande Village for RV's such as the Eagle, is nothing more than a parking lot. But it has most all facilities (30 Amp only) except phone. Boquillas, Mexico is very close and it is worth the boat ride (paddled by the locals) over to Boquillas. When there, you can sit on a nice porch overlooking Boquillas Canyon... enjoy some Cerveza and homemade tacos (they are excellent). The town has little to no electricity. All of the food is cooked with a wood fire or in some cases they get modern and use butane. Be ready for the local children to try and sell you some of their trinkets, but this adds to the realness of this place and the memory it will leave you with. Excellent cycling here (on of the best and in line with Fort Davis, only in a different way). It is very hot here in the summer months (100°+) and dry. Hiking is fantastic here and a must area is the Chisos Basin. You cannot get an RV into Chisos unless it is under 30 feet. The roads are too tight and there is not a site large enough to accommodate any rig over this size. There is a lodge and cabins here and they look great. Would we stay here again: Yes Troy and Jane's Rating: Troy's: 8.0 Jane's: 6.0 Combined: 7.0 In an RV such as the Eagle, you will not do a lot of lounging around the site, as the beauty of the place is out and about from the site. There is an excellent camping site in the Village, but it does not have full hook-up. Only a dump... no water, electricity or anything else. Therefore you have to run the generator and use the shower/toilet facilities in the park. Site Rating: Pending
Monument Valley, Utah (Gouldings Monument Valley Campground and RV Resort) This is also a great park. Breathtaking views... unbelievable. The park does not have phone connection at the site, but it is available in the laundry room (which is quite clean and nice... connection speeds with a 56K modem was 33-36 thousand BPS). Service is 30 amps and the arrangement of the RV Park is laid out very well. An interesting bit of history here... many westerns have been filmed at this location. The primary film maker was John Ford who's main star was John Wayne. They stayed at Gouldings when shooting and there is a special cabin dedicated to John Wayne at this campground. It is very dry and the sites are not paved or graveled which makes it quite dusty (red dust). If the sites were based with something other than just soil, it would be much better. Would we stay here again: Yes Troy and Jane's Rating: Troy's: 7.5 Jane's 7.0 Combined 7.25 Site Rating: Best: 34 Second: 35 Third: 36 On our first stay, we were in site 23, which was fine... except for the view. It was right next to the restrooms and the store. The site was very large, allowing us to pull through, hook up, and our vehicle was well out of the road and did not even need to be unhooked. So the site is probably the most convenient in the park. But the views are obstructed more than you would like to see and there is a bit of noise from the AC at the store. Which makes sitting outside less aesthetic than you would like for such a beautiful area. Also, in site 23, the Satellite System was obstructed by some adjacent trees and we had to use the cable system at the park.
Kerrville, Texas (Buckhorn Lake Resort) This is the best RV Park that we have ever stayed at and I seriously doubt that you can do any better anywhere in North America. All the pads are concrete and with full hook-up... including modem at the site. Fantastic hospitality. Must see to appreciate. Would we stay here again: Yes Troy and Jane's Rating: Troy's: 10.0 Jane's 10.0 Combined 10.0 Site Rating: There literally is not a bad site in the whole place.
